Escape To...The Coat & Bear

As we approach the end of a gloomy January, with routines back in full swing, you may be ready to plan your next dose of escapism. Let us introduce The Coat and Bear - a boutique retreat in the heart of Newbury, offering the perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and thoughtful little touches (even for guests of the four-legged variety!).

Join us as we explore what makes this charming destination so special...

Please can you tell us a little about The Coat and Bear?
The Coat & Bear opened last year and is part of the award-winning Heartwood Collection, which has 27 other pubs located across England. The Coat & Bear has 26 boutique bedrooms ranging from Comfy rooms through to the beautiful beams and exposed brickwork of the very unique Grand suite. The rooms have been beautifully decorated with lots of thoughtful touches to give guests an elevated home from home experience whatever the reason for their stay. Guests will discover softly playing Roberts radios, freshly made sweet treats under a Nkuku cloche, Illy coffee and, of course, complimentary Bramley toiletries! We cater for everyone with family and dog friendly rooms (we even provide a Bramley toiletry pack for pampered pooches visiting us!) and accessible rooms.

Where are you located & what are some of the area highlights for guests?
You’ll find our Georgian fronted building right in the heart of Newbury which has a wealth of independent shops to explore. It's a stone’s throw from the Kennett & Avon Canal which is the perfect spot for a stroll and to feed the swans and ducks. Further afield you will find Highclere Castle, made famous by Downton Abbey.

What is your favourite thing on the menu at the moment?

It has to be the grand souffle! We are known for our signature cheese souffle starter with its warm Ford Farm Coastal Cheddar sauce and our rich pistachio souffle with Jude’s chocolate ice cream, but we introduced a souffle main when we launched our winter menu. This large and very fluffy souffle pairs mushroom duxelle with oak-smoked Cheddar and a truffle cheese and chive sauce. Our guests absolutely love it and now they can, if they want to, enjoy a full three course souffle meal!

What is your favourite Bramley product at The Coat & Bear?
It has to be the Pillow spray! A good night’s sleep is so important and we want to ensure that our guests have everything they need to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the day.

Why have you chosen to work with Bramley and how do our values align?
As a B Corp business Bramley’s values align beautifully with ours as a three star rated business by the Sustainable Restaurant Association, the highest rating possible. With our focus on seasonality and sustainability, the natural nature of Bramley’s products complements our offering perfectly to give every guest the best possible experience when they visit us.

Are there any exciting plans in the pipeline for the coming months?
We are busy planning for Mother’s Day and will be creating some very special specials to celebrate the day. Throughout every Sunday in February we are also offering a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with a full roast! With bottomless trimmings and limited availability, we’re sure this is going to be very popular with our guests. There is so much happening at The Coat & Bear that our website is the best place to head to and plan a visit to see us.

Anything else to mention?
In case you’re wondering, The Coat & Bear was named after the infamous Newbury Coat of 1811 and is also a nod to the creator of Paddington, Michael Bond, who was born in Newbury. Visit the Paddington bench down the road from the pub on the High Street for the perfect photo opp.
