Everything You Need To Know About AHAs

Everything You Need To Know About AHAs

We use AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) in our Apple Peel AHA Face Exfoliator (at 10% inclusion) and our Marigold Purifying Face Mask (at 3% inclusion), here is the low down on these brilliantly brightening ingredients....

What are alpha hydroxy acids?

AHAs are a group of plant and animal derived acids using in skincare products.  They are water-soluble chemical exfoliants that naturally occur in organic sugars, such as glycolic acid from sugar cane, lactic acid from milk, and malic acid from apples.

What are the benefits of using AHAs?

AHAs are used to primarily exfoliate skin by helping to get rid of layers of dead cells, allowing new, softer and more evenly pigmented skin cells to generate.

Other benefits include helping to reduce visible sun damage, boosting circulation, smoothing the appearance of fine lines and encouraging hydration.

How should you use AHAs effectively & safely?

If you have not used AHAs before you should introduce them slowly into your skincare routine and we’d recommend as part of your evening routine. If your skin is particularly sensitive it might be that you try using them once a week at first, before gradually building up your tolerance to avoid irritation.

Also, please note that using AHAs can increase your sun sensitivity so make sure you include a SPF into your daily routine.

Who should use AHAs & who should avoid them?

AHAs can be irritating for those with sensitive skin so may be more appropriate for age-related skin concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles.  Again, gradual introduction is key.

Which ingredients pair well with AHAs?

An ideal combination is pairing AHAs with hyaluronic acid. Despite its name, hyaluronic acid doesn’t function like an AHA – it doesn’t strip skin, but is highly nourishing and hydrating.

Are AHAs best used in rinse-off or non-rinse products?

Both. The longer the product stays on the skin, the larger the impact, but sensitive skin may be more suited to the gentler touch of wash-off cleansers or face masks.
