There’s something so wonderfully comforting about Fischer’s Baslow Hall. Tucked away in the heart of the Peak District, it’s the kind of place that instantly makes you exhale a little deeper, all crackling fires, beautiful gardens, thoughtful details and the warmest welcome. We caught up with the team behind this much-loved family-run hotel to talk about nature, nostalgia, kitchen gardens, restorative escapes and the little everyday moments of Botanical Magic™ that make Baslow Hall feel so special.
Fischer’s Baslow Hall feels wonderfully timeless yet deeply personal. How would you describe the spirit of the house to someone arriving for the very first time?
Baslow Hall is a majestic Grade II-listed manor with over a century of history, nestled in the very heart of the picturesque Peak District National Park. The tree-lined drive leads visitors to a place rich in heritage and intrigue, creating an inviting playground for those eager to explore its storied past. As a cherished, family-run boutique hotel, Baslow Hall enchants guests with personal narratives and a warm, captivating atmosphere, perfectly illustrating relaxation and rejuvenation. Every detail is meticulously and seamlessly executed. On rainy days, umbrellas are prepared for guests arriving by car, with our attentive staff eagerly awaiting their arrival to ensure a seamless entry to the hall, where exceptional hospitality awaits.
Our personal story, grounded in nostalgia and a deep passion, touches hearts. Acquired in 1988 by Max and Susan Fischer, who were captivated by its charm and saw its great potential, they quickly transformed this once-abandoned building into the remarkable boutique hotel it is today. They relocated their young family to the property, turning this dormant site into a special, one-of-a-kind sanctuary. Now hosting one of Derbyshire’s most acclaimed restaurants, Fischer’s Baslow Hall provides an unmatched dining experience with unrivalled personalised service, meticulous attention to detail, and innovative modern British cuisine in a stunning setting with nature playing a significant part in its story.

Guests appreciate the warm, family atmosphere, engaging fireside stories, and tailored service. Baslow Hall offers a romantic escape with eleven luxurious bedrooms and lavish interiors, having recently undergone a sensitive refurbishment this year.
Set on the edge of the Peak District, how does the surrounding landscape shape the experience you offer?
Baslow Hall benefits from its surroundings, which are abundant in natural beauty. Tucked quietly in the heart of the stunning Peak District National Park, it offers breathtaking views, enchanting woodlands, and a diverse array of flora and fauna. This setting provides a perfect, enchanting escape from the hustle of modern life and is the perfect venue for our popular foraging courses, which guests enjoy year after year.
Our landscapes reflect our values of escapism and connecting with nature, offering a luxurious and tranquil retreat. We are proud to collaborate with and support our neighbours. We are hugely honoured to have Chatsworth House, often described as the Palace in the Peaks, as our direct neighbour, with whom we are so proud to work on various initiatives to enhance and preserve the region’s raw, natural beauty.

Our own beautiful gardens and well-maintained lawns lead to our bountiful kitchen gardens, which display vibrant colours and cultivated foods. Guests can expect carefully chosen, sustainably sourced ingredients from these gardens, along with the best local produce.
For someone escaping to you for a restorative stay, what does a perfectly unhurried day at Fischer’s Baslow Hall look like?
Fischer’s at Baslow Hall focuses on personal comfort and relaxation, encouraging guests to unwind at their own pace. Our aim is for every visitor to enjoy our delicious, sustainable food and find a peaceful corner to rest, with our dedicated staff ensuring a high level of care throughout their stay.
Baslow Hall embodies privacy, individuality, and unrivalled quality. As a privately owned, family-run boutique hotel, it takes pride in its distinctive personal style. Fischer’s is a perfect balance of nature and nurture.

At Bramley, we celebrate Botanical Magic™, those small, nature-led moments that uplift the everyday. Where do you see those moments come to life at Baslow Hall?
We are surrounded by a wealth of nature, a dream for all visitors. Our highly sought-after foraging courses captivate visitors with a truly unique and deeply personal experience that combines a love of nature with a deeper understanding of where our food comes from, while offering multiple health benefits. Our valued guests have the opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of the local area as they learn the art of foraging for wild, edible plants and mushrooms. This unique event broadens your knowledge and delights your taste buds with delicious, freshly foraged ingredients served during an exquisite lunch after a morning spent in the wild.
Seasonality plays such an important role in your kitchen. Are there particular ingredients, aromas or flavours that signal a new season arriving at Baslow Hall?
Baslow Hall’s abundant kitchen gardens overflow with seasonal stories and exciting new plants. Spring brings wild garlic, rhubarb growing abundantly around us and giving a welcome pop of colour, along with a busy potting shed full of lively plans and new additions to our enchanting borders. Our pathways and borders guide us to fresh arrivals and vibrant seasonal colours, from tulips to herbaceous plants and eager shoots waiting for their time. We believe ingredients taste best and retain more nutrients when harvested in their true season, a principle we deeply value. Sustainable practices are central to every decision we make.

Our Head Gardener conducts many garden tours and talks passionately about celebrating the freshest of produce along with her grow plans. Our extraordinary award-winning Head Chef John Shuttleworth and dedicated Head Gardener Kim Orwin work closely to cultivate an abundance of fresh, vibrant seasonal ingredients from the extensive kitchen gardens, which can be seen being hand-picked before every service. Herbs are essential for infusing natural flavours into dishes. It is delightful to see guests strolling along the pathways, their hands passing through the mint and squeezing the oils from the rosemary bushes.
When guests leave, what feeling (or perhaps even what memory of scent or place) do you hope lingers with them long after their stay?
We always hope our guests leave eager to return, feeling refreshed, entertained, intrigued, nourished, and having experienced something truly magical, whether they are writing a novel, enjoying a restorative stay, or simply escaping the noise of modern life for a romantic getaway. Our goal is for guests to develop a yearning to revisit our peaceful haven in the Peaks. Our guests arrive as valued customers and depart as cherished friends.
Are there any exciting plans in the pipeline for Baslow Hall in the coming months?
We are always filled with excitement as each season unfolds, bringing a sense of renewal and hope. This month, we re-open our summer terrace, which is always the highlight of the social calendar, welcoming over 80 guests to experience Fischer’s finest hospitality. We partner with premium brands such as Laurent Perrier, Gusbourne and Global Brands, and are thrilled to be working with Bramley, all of which align with our strict ethos of integrity and authenticity.
As we open the terrace, we bring a serious dose of quintessential nostalgia and sprinkle a little magic over our visitors from far and wide.

After chatting with the team at Fischer’s Baslow Hall, it’s impossible not to want to pack a bag and escape to the Peaks immediately. From wandering through the kitchen gardens and brushing past fragrant rosemary, to long lunches, cosy corners and slow mornings on the terrace, Baslow Hall feels full of those little moments that stay with you long after you leave. A place rooted in nature, storytelling and heartfelt hospitality, with just the right sprinkle of magic.
